About Miss World

juliamorley-200x300-200x300The Miss World beauty pageant was first introduced as part of the Festival of Britain celebrations. Miss World is the major longest running international beauty pageant. In every participating country, there is an annual national beauty pageant organised under the Miss World Organisation. The winner of Miss World Malaysia would then proceed to contest in Miss World. The winner of Miss World would spend a year travelling to represent Miss World Organisation and its causes like Beauty with a Purpose (BWP).

Miss Julia Morley, wife of Miss World creator, Eric Morley took over in the year 2000 as current Chairman and CEO of the Miss World Organisation, after Eric Morley died in 1951. BWP was created 30 years ago by Julia Morley so that BWP makes the Miss World crown the symbol for fundraising and charity. The element of charity does not stop at the title holder herself but it is extended to encourage the Miss World contestants and license holders from every country to help aid community projects in their own countries. With regards to the achievements of Miss World Malaysia titleholders after having the limelight during the Miss World pageant, many of them have proceeded to paths of success in other fields of the entertainment industry.

For instance, Datuk Michelle Yeoh, Miss Malaysia World 1983, has become very famous in Hollywood. She is well-known for blockbusters like Charlie’s Angels, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Memoirs of a Geisha, and of course the unforgettable Bond Girl in the everlasting James Bond movie, Tomorrow Never Dies. Our very own Malaysian Cinema Queen is the popular Erra Fazira (Miss World Malaysia 1992) who stars in countless local movies. Meanwhile, Soo Wincci, Miss Malaysia World  2008, is currently a Malaysian singer, actress, composer, host and celebrity. Other famous past winners of Miss Malaysia World  who garnered success in entertainment are the likes of Lina Teoh, Arianna Teoh, Jaclyn Lee, Tan Su Wei, Gloria Ting, Emmeline Ng, Deborah Priya Henry and Thanuja Ananthan. As of now, Miss World has been organised for 61 years. It has evolved from a beauty pageant focused on aesthetics and physical beauty to one where charity and inner beauty are the main concerns.

In order to continue with that tradition of finding the ultimate beauty inside out, in 2013, it is Malaysia’s wish to have our Miss World crown of overall beauty to be ours to call.

dato-anna-lim-200x300Twice international beauty queen Datuk Anna Lim has come a full circle by being appointed as the official pageant licensee and organiser for the prestigious Miss Malaysia World since June 2013.

Anna, who won the Miss Malaysia/Universe 1990 and Mrs Malaysia/World 2004/2005 titles was given the mandate by chairman and chief executive officer of the Miss World Organisation Julia Morley during a simple ceremony in London. Present were Miss World Limited event director Steve Douglas and Tourism Malaysia deputy director of the United Kingdom and Ireland Sharon Ho.

Anna will be responsible for choosing Malaysia’s representative for the glamorous Miss World 2014 finals in London, in August “I am extremely proud to be associated with the Miss World organisation. Everything the organisation stands for is something I am passionate about in life. Through this appointment, I am able to carry out my passion with a reputable organisation,” she said.

Anna pledged to set it upon herself to successfully continue the legacy of the prestigious pageant. “I am committed to make sure that it won’t just be a pageant based on beauty. The contestants will have to meet several criteria aside from being Malaysia’s most beautiful women.

“They will need to impress the judges with their personality and intelligence. With this in mind, the theme for Miss Malaysia World 2014 is ‘Beauty with a Purpose’.

“I want to send out the message that beauty queens are not just known for their looks but also for the contribution they’ve made for the society,” she said.

Anna was confident that Malaysia would shine at the finals: “We are on the lookout for that one girl who has what it takes be a winner as well as a beauty who represents women everywhere.”
